All one to one sessions are based in Edinburgh.
If you are looking for gentle yoga in Edinburgh, this practice offers a welcoming way to slow down, breathe deeply and reconnect with your body and mind. Rooted in a tradition that spans thousands of years, yoga is far more than physical movement—it is a holistic practice that brings together body, breath and awareness. At the heart of yoga philosophy are the eight limbs of yoga, which guide us towards greater balance, mindfulness and connection both within ourselves and with the world around us. Through gentle stretches, mindful breathing and moments of quiet stillness, gentle yoga creates space to release tension, improve mobility and support overall well-being.
My gentle yoga classes in Edinburgh are designed to be calm, supportive and accessible for everyone, including beginners or those looking for a slower, more mindful style of yoga. In a world that often asks us to move faster and do more, stepping onto the mat can feel like coming home to yourself. Each breath becomes an opportunity to quiet the mind, ease the body and create space for rest and renewal. As the Bhagavad Gita reminds us, “Yoga is the journey of the self, through the self, to the self.” Whether you are completely new to yoga or searching for beginner-friendly yoga classes in Edinburgh, these gentle sessions offer a nurturing environment where you can move at your own pace while developing strength, flexibility and inner calm.

My intention in every yoga class and workshop I teach is simple: to create a warm, welcoming space where everyone feels safe, comfortable and supported. Yoga should never feel intimidating or exclusive. Instead, it can be a place where you arrive exactly as you are—giving yourself time to breathe, move, and reconnect with your body and mind.
In my Edinburgh based classes, I gently guide students through their practice while encouraging them to listen to their own bodies. Everyone’s journey is different, and yoga offers us the opportunity to explore what feels right for us individually. My hope is that each person leaves feeling a little more open, relaxed and connected to themselves, having discovered new possibilities within their body, breath and mind.

Although I qualified as a Hatha yoga teacher in 2021, my journey with mindfulness and breath began much earlier. When I was 12 years old, I took part in a two-year study with Edinburgh University that explored the benefits of meditation and visualisation for gymnasts. At the time I was deeply involved in gymnastics, and the techniques we learned helped improve focus and performance. But more importantly, they gave me tools that helped calm my mind during my teenage years. That experience was my first real introduction to how powerful the mind and breath can be when we learn how to work with them.

At 17, I had surgery on my left shoulder after years of recurrent dislocations that began when I was 14. During the procedure my shoulder was pinned and both my biceps and triceps were shortened. At the time I was told that arthritis in that shoulder by the age of 20 would be almost inevitable due to the surgery. Hearing that at such a young age encouraged me to start exploring ways to care for my body for the long term. This is when yoga first came into my life. I had read that a regular yoga practice could help maintain mobility and support joint health, so I began to practise gently. More than 30 years later, I’m very grateful to say that I still have no sign of arthritis in that shoulder.

Life also brought challenges that deepened my connection to breathwork. When I was 25, my husband was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. He faced the illness with incredible courage during a three-year battle, and during that time I found myself leaning heavily on breathwork and pranayama. These practices became invaluable in helping me stay calm during moments of uncertainty and helped me manage anxiety and panic attacks. Breath became something I could always return to when things felt overwhelming.
Those life experiences have shaped the way I teach today. Yoga, for me, is far more than physical movement. It’s a collection of simple but powerful tools that can support us through life’s challenges as well as its joys.

In my classes (Gorgie Edinburgh), I share gentle movement, breathing practices and moments of stillness that students can take with them off the mat and into their everyday lives. My aim is always to create a space where people feel comfortable exploring their practice at their own pace, without judgement or pressure.
Yoga has supported me through many stages of life, and it’s a privilege to share that journey with others. I truly believe that everyone can benefit from yoga, and I look forward to welcoming you to a class whenever you feel ready.

Gentle yoga uses slow, mindful stretches that gradually encourage the muscles and joints to release tension. Over time this can help improve flexibility, increase mobility and make everyday movements feel easier and more comfortable.
Moving the body gently and regularly helps keep the joints nourished and mobile. Gentle yoga can support joint health by encouraging a healthy range of motion without placing strain on the body.
Even slow and gentle movements help to strengthen muscles, particularly the core and the muscles that support posture. This strength develops gradually and in a supportive way that feels accessible for most people.
Many yoga movements help to open the chest, lengthen the spine and release tightness in the shoulders and neck. Over time this can help improve posture and reduce tension created by sitting or daily stress.
Gentle yoga activates the body’s relaxation response, helping the nervous system shift out of “fight or flight” mode. This can reduce feelings of stress and support a deeper sense of calm and balance.
Through mindful movement, breath awareness and relaxation, gentle yoga provides space for the mind to slow down. Many people find it helps reduce anxiety and creates a sense of mental clarity and ease.
Yoga encourages a deeper connection with the breath. Learning to breathe more slowly and consciously can increase lung capacity, support relaxation and help the body feel more energised.
The combination of movement, breath and mindfulness can help release emotional tension held in the body. Gentle yoga can create a sense of grounding and emotional steadiness.
Yoga invites you to focus on the present moment. By bringing attention to the breath and body, the mind gradually becomes quieter, helping cultivate greater awareness and inner stillness.
Practising gentle yoga regularly can help relax the body and calm the mind, making it easier to fall asleep and enjoy deeper, more restorative rest.
Slow stretching and mindful movement help release areas of tightness commonly held in the neck, shoulders, hips and back. This can reduce discomfort and bring a sense of ease to the body.
By supporting the body, calming the mind, balancing emotions and deepening the breath, gentle yoga nurtures a feeling of overall wellbeing and connection within yourself.

Not at all. Gentle yoga classes are perfect for beginners as well as those returning to yoga after a break, injury or simply looking for a slower, more mindful practice. Everything is guided step-by-step and you are always encouraged to move at your own pace and listen to your body.
Gentle yoga focuses on slow, mindful movement, comfortable stretches and relaxed breathing. The aim is to help release tension, improve mobility and calm the mind rather than to push the body into challenging poses. It is a nurturing practice that supports both physical wellbeing and mental relaxation.
Absolutely not. Flexibility is something that develops gradually through practice. Yoga meets you exactly where you are, and every posture can be adapted so it feels comfortable for your body. Over time you may notice increased mobility and ease of movement.
If you have your own yoga mat you are welcome to bring it along, but many venues also provide mats. You may also like to bring a small blanket or a bottle of water. Wearing comfortable clothing that allows you to move easily is all you really need.
Choose comfortable clothing that allows you to stretch and move freely, such as leggings, joggers or loose-fitting trousers with a T-shirt or top. Yoga is usually practised barefoot so there is no need for special footwear.
In many cases gentle yoga can be very supportive, but it is always best to let your teacher know about any injuries or health conditions before the class begins. This allows poses to be adapted and ensures you feel safe and supported throughout the practice.
A gentle yoga class usually begins with a short moment to settle and focus on the breath. This is followed by slow, mindful movements and stretches designed to warm and open the body. Breath awareness is often woven throughout the practice, and classes usually finish with a period of relaxation so the body and mind can fully rest.
Yoga is not about keeping up with anyone else. You are always welcome to pause, rest or modify a movement at any time. Listening to your body is one of the most important parts of the practice.
Many gentle yoga classes include simple breathing techniques (pranayama) and short moments of relaxation or mindfulness. These practices can help calm the nervous system, reduce stress and bring a deeper sense of balance to the body and mind.
Gentle yoga can help improve flexibility, mobility and posture while also encouraging relaxation and reducing stress. Many people find it supports better sleep, calmer breathing and a greater sense of overall wellbeing. Over time, it can become a valuable tool for maintaining both physical and emotional balance in everyday life.
This is a very common feeling, especially if it’s your first class. Many people attend yoga on their own and quickly discover that the environment is welcoming and relaxed. Gentle yoga classes are designed to feel safe and supportive, and you’ll always be guided through the practice step by step.
Gentle yoga classes welcome adults of all ages and stages of life. Many people come to gentle yoga specifically because they want a slower, more supportive practice. The emphasis is on comfort, mindful movement and listening to your body rather than keeping up with anyone else.
Booking your first class is simple. You can book your place online through the workshops page on our website, or if you prefer a more personal approach you are very welcome to contact me directly to reserve a space. Just send an email to kirstinehenderson@btinternet.com and I can book you into the class, with the option to pay cash on the day. If you’re new or have any questions before attending, please feel free to reach out—I’m always happy to help you feel comfortable before your first class.
